Term	Explanation
Q₁₀	Increase in death rate due to a 10°C increase in temperature. z = 18/log(Q₁₀)
Q₁₀	Ratio of reaction rates for a 10 °C change in temperature
Quaternary ammonium compound; Quaternary; Quat	A cation with four alkyl groups attached to a nitrogen. Surfactant; usually bactericidal
Retort	Industrial device for heating materials (e. g., canned goods) under pressure.
Rideal-Walker; R-W	A variation of the phenol coefficient test
RODAC	Replicate organism detection and counting; or Replicate organism direct agar counting An agar plate made to be pressed against a surface to estimate microbial population on the surface.
Rogosa SL broth (agar)	Selective media for culture of oral, vaginal, and fecal lactobacilli. Named for one of the developers (Rogosa).
Round-bottom flask	An essentially spherical glass container with one to five necks; the bottom is not flattened.
