Term Explanation
m  May indicate a medium developed for culturing microorganisms on membrane filters.
M broth Broth containing mannose; used for detecting Salmonella
Maillard reaction Reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids; ‘non-enzymic browning’; common problem in autoclaving
MES 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 5.5-6.7.
MIL Military, as in MIL-Spec (military specification)
MIL Motility Indole Lysine; medium used to identify Enterobacteriaceae cultures on the basis of motility, lysine decarboxylase, lysine deaminase, and indole production
MinESS Minimal essential antiserum set used for Salmonella and Shigella identification. (Difco).
MIO Motility, Indole, Ornithine: medium used to identify Enterobacteriaceae cultures on the basis of motility, ornithine decarboxylase, and indole production.
MIO Medium MIO: Motility Indole Ornithine
MOPS 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 6.5-7.9.
MOPSO 3-(N-morpholino)-2-hydroxypropane-sulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 6.3-7.6
Most Probable Number A procedure for estimating microbial population by making serial dilutions of 3 or 5 samples and noting the greatest dilutions in which growth occurs.
MPN Most Probable Number
MR-VP Methyl Red - Voges Proskauer. Tests used to distinguish among coliforms.
MR-VP Medium Methyl Red - Voges Proskauer medium
MTM Modified Thayer-Martin (medium); used in culture of Neisseria.
