Term Explanation
D value Time required to destroy 90% of cells under specified conditions
D/E Dey/Engley: contains sodium thioglycollate, sodium thiosulfate, sodium bisulfite, soy lecithin, and Polysorbate 80; for neutralizing antiseptics and disinfectants.
DCLS Desoxycholate Citrate Lactose Saccharose. (Saccharose = Sucrose). Used for isolating Gram-negative enteric bacilli.
Decimal reduction time Time required to destroy 90% of cells under specified conditions (D value)
Degree-days Summation of (Temperature [°F]) - 50°F) for each day in the period April-October
DI Deionized  (water)
Dienes Stain For staining Mycoplasma colonies. ‘Dienes’ is presumably the name of the discoverer, not a chemical term.
DIPSO 3-(N,N-bis[2-hydroxyethyl]amino)-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 7.0-8.2.

DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid
Dnase Deoxyribonuclease
DTM Dermatophyte Test Medium
Dye reduction Test for presence/activity of microorganisms by adding either methylene blue or resazurin. The organisms reduce the dyes from blue to colorless  or blue to red.
