Term Explanation
CAN Colistin and Nalidixic Acid. Used in media for isolating Gram-positive cocci.
CAPS 3-[cyclohexylamino]-1-propane-sulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 9.7-11.1.
CAPSO 3-[cyclohexylamino]-2-hydroxypropane sulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 8.9-10.3.
Casamino acids Acid digest of casein treated to eliminate or reduce vitamins.
Cetrimide Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide
CF Citrovorum factor
CFR (US) Code of Federal Regulations. For instance, 21CFR is Title 21, CFR, dealing with pharmaceuticals
CGMP Current Good Manufacturing Practice
Chemostat A kind of continuous culture reactor in which the growth rate is controlled by concentration of a medium component  (substrate). Typically, the flow rate of fresh medium is set and growth is limited by depletion of a nutrient.
CHES 2-(N-cyclohexylamino)ethanesulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 8.6-10.0.
Chick-Martin A variation of the Rideal-Walker test (which is itself a variation of the phenol coefficient test)
CHO Chinese hamster ovary (cells)
CHO medium base A basal medium to which carbohydrates may be added; used to study fermentation by anaerobes.
