Term Explanation
EC medium

Escherichia coli medium

EE Embryo Extract
EE Broth Mossel From formula of Mossel et al.; for selective enrichment of Enterobacteriaceae from foods. Contains tryptone, dextrose Na2PO4, KH2PO4, Brilliant Green, and oxgall (ox bile).
EEC Enteropathogenic E. coli
Ehrlich reagent Solution of p-dimethylamino-benzaldehyde and HCl in ethyl alcohol; test for indole.
ELISA Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
Emerson Yp Ss agar Medium for culture of Allomyces and other fungi. Contains yeast extract, soluble starch, K2HPO4, MgSO4, agar; pH 7.0.
Endo (Named after discoverer?) Indicates one of the variations of medium containing fuchsin and sulfite to distinguish organisms which do/do not ferment lactose.
EPPS N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N’-(3-propanesulfonic acid; buffer for pH range 7.4-8.7.
ES Enrichment serology
EVA Ethyl Violet Azide; used in media for culturing enterococci.
Extremophiles Term coined for (micro)organisms which live in (relatively) extreme conditions of temperature, pH, salt content, etc.
EY Tellurite Egg Yolk and potassium tellurite; used in media for culturing Staphylococcus aureus.
