Ultrazentrifuge f Ultracentrifuge An ultracentrifuge runs at very high speed and sufficiently high ‘g’ force to sediment protein molecules. Very small volume, usually observed with an optical system, and in an armored enclosure.

Umkehrosmose   Reverse osmosis Liquid is forced under high pressure through a membrane to purify water or to separate certain fermentation products

untergärig   Bottom-fermenting Yeast, usually in beer production
Unterleibstyphus   Typhoid fever Pathogen: Salmonella typhi (usually in water with fecal pollution).

Note: There is much confusion in German literature between typhoid fever and typhus!! Accurate translation may require knowledge of the situation, symptoms, and pathogen! Typhoid fever: Incubation 3 – 60 days, usually ca. 10 days. Headache, chill, fever increasing by steps over 5-7 days, lasting 2-3 weeks, rash in 2d week. Up to 30% fatalities if untreated (chloramphenicol, amicillin)

Note: Other Salmonella species cause similar diseases.

Note: S. typhi has previously been known as S. typhosa and Eberthella typhosa.
