IMP   IMP Inosine monophosphate; inosinic acid
Impfgut   Inoculum Microbial culture used to initiate growth in a new (usually larger) container

Impfstoff   Vaccine Suspension or solution for active immunization
Impfstutz   Inoculation port An entry into a fermentor through which an inoculum is added.
IMViC   IMViC A set of tests for E. coli: I: Indole formation; M: produces acid to turn Methyl Red indicator red; V: Voges-Proskauer reaction (production of acetoin); C: utilization of Citrate as sole carbon source.
Inaktivierungsfaktor   Inactivation factor N0/N in sterilization, where N0 is the initial count and N is the count after sterilization
Indikator m Indicator A specific chemical meaning is: a material which changes color with change of pH (acidity) (or with change in oxidation/reduction potential)
Indikatorbakterien   Indicator bacteria (1) Bacteria which are sensitive to a certain antibiotic and thus leave zones of inhibition around cultures which produce the antibiotic (2) Relatively easily detected bacteria which indicate potential presence of pathogens
induziert   Induced Refers to enzymes produce in response to the presence of a specific substance (inducer)
induziertes Enzym   Induced enzyme An enzyme which appears in bacteria in response to the presence of its substrate
Innenschlange   Interior coil Coil of tubing used to heat or cool contents of a fermentor

Invertzucker   Invert sugar Mixture of glucose and fructose produced by acid or enzyme hydrolysis of sucrose
Ionenaustausch   Ion exchange  
Ionenslektivelektrode f Ion-selective electrode Sensitive to certain specific cations and (a few) specific anions.
isoelektrischer Punkt   Isoelectric point The pH at which a colloidal particle or a protein molecule has zero charge in relation to the surrounding solution.
Isolierung   Isolation Separation of microorganisms, or specific microorganisms, from cultures
Isonikotinsäurehydrazid   Isonicotinic hydrazide(INH)  
Itaconsäure   Itaconic acid Methylene succinic acid
Itaweinsäure   Itatartaric acid 1-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethylsuccinic acid
