Halophil   Halophile Microorganisms which grow at high salt concentrations
halophil adj Halophilic Able to grow at high salt concentrations
Harnstoff   Urea H2NC=ONH2
hartes Wasser   Hard water Water containing calcium and magnesium ions
Hauch   Film Strains of Proteus vulgaris which have flagellae and are motile can cover the surface of a nutrient medium as a thin gray film. These are called ‘H’ (Hauch) forms. Strains which lack flagellae are called ‘o. H.’ (ohne Hauch, O) strains. Antigens to the flagellae are ‘H’ antigens, and antigens to the cell surface are O antigens.

Hefeextrakt   Yeast extract Water-soluble portion of autolyzed yeast. Contains B complex vitamins.
Heisshaltestrecke   Heat maintenance section Section of pipe in which heat is maintained (e. g., for sterilizing)
Heissluftofen m Hot air oven  
Heissluftofensterilisier   Hot air sterilizer Sterilizing oven
Heizmantel m Heating jacket ‘Jacket’ on large industrial equipment
Heizmantel m Heating mantle ‘Mantle’ on laboratory scale glass flasks, etc. (electrically heated)
Hellfeld   Bright field ‘Standard’ microscope illumination system in which the light illuminating the object being examined enters the microscope objective lens.
Hemmhof   Zone of inhibition Region on a solid medium in which a sensitive bacterium does not grow around a source of antibiotic.

Henry’sche Gesetz   Henry’s law Solubility is a function of partial pressure
heterofermentativ   Heterofermentative Producing numerous products/byproducts
Heterotroph   Heterotroph A microorganism which cannot grow on a mineral medium, but requires one or more organic compounds (usually as energy sources)
Heubacillus   Hay bacillus An old term for Bacillus subtilis
Hochleistungsschwebstofffilter   HEPA filter(?) High-efficiency particulate air filter
hochreines Wasser   Ultrapure water  
Hockdruckflüssigkeitschromatographie f High pressure liquid chromatography HPLC; the abbreviation is commonly used.
Hohlspiegel   Concave mirror A microscope illuminator, used without a condenser

Homogenisator   Homogenizer  
Hutpilze   Mushrooms Literally: capped fungi

Hyphenpilz   Filamentous fungus Hyphae :  growth filaments
