Gärröhrchen   Fermentation tube A culture tube containing a liquid growth medium and a small inverted test tube. Production of gas by the culture is shown by accumulation of a gas bubble in the inverted tube.
Gärung   Fermentation In strict use, ‘fermentation’ occurs in the absence of oxygen; but the term is used casually for large-scale microbial cultures in general.
Gasgangrän   Gas gangrene Disease produced by Clostridium perfringens  (or histolyticum or septicum)in wounds with very inadequate blood circulation (oxygenation)

Gegenfärbung   Counterstaining In Gram staining, for instance, the cells which do not stain blue are counterstained red to make them visible.
Geissel, Geisseln   Flagellum, flagella (Not called cilia in bacteria)
gekoppelt adj Coupled In metabolism, this refers primarily to the linkage between oxidation of metabolites and production of high-energy phosphate bonds (e. g., ADP --> ATP); but some other reactions are also coupled.
Gelatine fsg Gelatin Animal product used in microbiology to solidify media. Ability to dissolve gelatin is used as a characteristic for identification of bacteria.

Generationszeit   Doubling time Time required for the number of organisms per unit volume to double

Generatorverfahren   Generator process An advance (and scale-up) of the quick vinegar process. Also ‘trickling generator process’.

Gerste f, -, -n Barley Cereal grain; source of malt (beer)
Gesamtzellzahl   Total cell count Includes dead cells as well as viable ones
Ghosts   Ghosts One term for fragments of cytoplasmic membrane remaining after protoplasts rupture
Glassinterfilter   Sintered glass filter  
glatt adj Smooth S  (smooth) forms of bacterial colonies are smooth and shiny (because cells are surrounded by polysaccharides which retain water). Differs from ‘rough’ forms.

GMP   GMP Guanosine monophosphate; guanylic acid
Gram-Färbung   Gram stain Staining system using Gentian Violet, Iodine, and Safranin solutions to distinguish between two major classifications of bacteria, Gram-positive (which stain blue) and Gram-negative  (which stain red). The two groups differ particularly in their resistance to antimicrobial agents.
Grenzdextrin   Limit dextrin Portion of starch molecule not hydrolyzed by amylase
