EDTA   EDTA Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (a chelating agent); Edetic acid (pharmaceutical name);‘officially’ called (ethylenedinitrilo)tetraacetic acid. Commonly called EDTA.
eichen v Calibrate a. To check a measuring instrument with one or more standards to ensure that the instrument is operating properly b. To apply graduations to a measurment scale
Eichkurve f Calibration curve A plot or graph of responses of an analytical procedure to several known concentrations of the analyte (the substance being determined). When an unknown sample is tested, the instrument response is applied to the calibration curve to determine the concentration of the analyte in the sample.
Eiklar   Egg white
Einhornkölbchen   Fermentation tube (Unicorn ??Perhaps named for a researcher named Einhorn?? Perhaps named for its shape.)
Einmal-   Disposable Single-use
Einschluss m,,  -e Inclusion
Einschlussmittel   Mounting medium Microscopy

eluieren v Elute
EMB-Agar   EMB Agar Growth medium containing Eosin and Methylene Blue
Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas Weg   Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway Often called just Embden-Meyerhof pathway. The major pathway from glucose to pyruvic acid/acetic acid/lactic acid/ethanol; glycolysis. Does not use oxygen; captures relatively little energy as ATP.
Emulgator   Emulsifier
Endospore f,   , -n Endospore More commonly, ‘spore’; in microbiology, this is a resistant ‘survival’ structure produced inside the cell. These spores are resistant to drying, heat, and chemical disinfectants. Only one spore is formed per cell.
Endospore f,  , -n Spore See ‘endospore’
endosporenbildend adj Spore-forming
Endproducthemmuing   Product inhibition
Energieeintrag   Power consumption
Energiequelle f, -, -e Energy source
Enterotube   Enterotube Roche tradename for a system used for differential identification of Enterobacteriaceae with biochemical tests
enthärtetes Wasser   Softened water Water from which calcium and magnesium ions have been removed, usually by ion exchange
entionisiert adj Deionized
Entkeimung   Sterilization
Entkeimungsfiltration   Sterile filtration Not just filtration done aseptically, but ‘sterilizing’ filtration to remove microbes from the filtrate.

Ergänzungsstoff   Supplement Generally nutritional supplements
Erichromschwarz   Eriochrome Black
Erlenmeyerkolben m, -s, - Erlenmeyer flask Conical glass container with flat bottom
Ernährungstyp m, -s, -en Nutritional type
Ernte   Harvest
Erreger   Cause Pathogen
Erregerfilter   Primary filter Optical filter which removes visible light from the ultraviolet light used in fluorescence microscopy
Erregerstrahlung   Exciting radiation Ultraviolet (or blue) radiation used to produce (excite) fluorescence in fluorescence microscopy
Ertragskoeffizient   Yield coefficient Product formed/substrate consumed. Note that some writers define specific yield coefficients (e. g., CO2 formed / substrate consumed).

Essigsäure   Acetic acid CH3COOH
Eucyte     Eucaryotic cell (a cell with a separate nucleus)
Eukaryont   Eucaryote An organism (cell) with a distinct nucleus surrounded by a nuclear membrane
Exospore   Exospore A spore formed (in Methylosinus trichosporium) by budding
Exponentielle Phase   Exponential phase; log phase
exponentielles Wachstum   Exponential growth Growth at a constant percentage per unit time; = log phase growth.
Expression   Expression Structure or activity resulting from genetic structure
Extinktion   Absorbance (photometric measurement) The literal ‘extinction’ is no longer used in the chemical/microbiological context.
