German   English Comments
Dampfsperr   Steam barrier Typically, a penetration into a fermentor (e. g., a stirrer shaft) which is surrounded by a steam jacket to prevent microbial contamination. More specifically, the steam jacket itself.
DANS   DANS Dimethylaminonaphthalenesulfonic acid
DAP   DAP Diaminopimelic acid
Dauerform   Resistant form
Dauerform   Survival form Commonly spores or cysts
Deckel   Lid of a fermentor, for instance
Deckglas   Cover slip Thin glass, circular, square, or rectangular, used to cover object(s) being examined with an optical microscope. Required for some optical systems. Thickness is important: No. 1:0.13 - 0.16 mm No. 1½: 0.16 - 0.19 mm No. 2:0.19 - 0.25 mm
Dekanter   Decanter; but see note In US usage, a decanter is a system in which two dispersed immiscible liquids separate by gravity and the two phases are withdrawn separately. In German usage, a decanter is (or may be) a centrifuge with a horizontal axis and a spiral auger which removes sedimented solids.
Del Faktor   q ln (N0/N);ln (inactivation factor)
Denitrifikanten   Denitrifying bacteria Aerobic bacteria which can grow anaerobically by using nitrate (NO3-) as an oxygen source, producing N2 or N2O
Denitrifikation   Denitrification Microbial use of the oxygen of nitrate, releasing free nitrogen
Desinfektionsmittel adj Disinfectant Implies destruction of pathogens; not synonymous with ‘sterilant’
Desinfizierung   Disinfection Implies destruction of pathogens; not synonymous with ‘sterilization’.
destilliert f Distilled
Dextran pl. Dextrane Dextran, dextrans Varous polymers of glucose, 1,6- linked, and with various other linkages. Not the same as dextrin
Dextrin   Dextrin A partially hydrolyzed starch; a 1-4-linked polymer of glucose. Not the same as dextran.
dezimale Reduktionszeit   Decimal reduction time Time required to reduce a microbial population to one-tenth its initial value (by heat treatment, for instance)
Diacetyl   Diacetyl CH3-CO-CO-CH3
Diaminopimelinsäure   Diaminopimelic acid
Diatomenerde   Diatomaceous earth Kieselguhr;common filter aid
Diauxie   Diauxy, diauxie Growth in two steps using a preferred substrate first followed by a less preferred one (two log phases separated by a lag phase).
Dichtegradient   Density gradient
Dichtung f Gasket
Dichtung f Packing Seal, usually for a rotating shaft
Dichtung f Seal
Dichtungsring m Sealing ring
Difco   Difco US manufacturer of microbiological media
Dispersier(gerät)   Disperser
DMRL   DMRL 7,6-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine
DNS   DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid
doppelt destilliert adj Double-distilled
Dosier-   Metering Addition of measured/controlled volume; proportioning; generally not ‘dosing’ in US usage.
Dosierpumpe f Metering pump
Dowex   Dowex A family of ion-exchange resins from the Dow Chemical Company
Druckluft f Compressed air
Dunkelfeld   Dark field A microscope optical system which makes small clear and colorless objects (e. g., bacteria) visible. The object is illuminated by light at an angle such that no light enters the microscope system except that which is diffracted by particles.
Dunkelstoffwechsel   Dark metabolism Metabolism of photosynthetic organisms in the absence of light
Dünnschichttrockner   Thin-film drier
Durchflusscytometrie   Flow cytometry Making measurements on individual cells, usually with a laser beam, as the cells flow in a thin stream; often coupled with automatic separation of the cells based on the values measured.
Durchsatz   Throughput
Durham Röhrchen   Durham tube(s) Small test tubes placed, mouth down, inside broth culture tubes. After autoclaving, they are full of broth. If the culture produces gas, a bubble collects inside the tube.
D-wert   Decimal reduction time; D ‘dezimale Reduktionszeit’; D10; time required to kill 90% of cells under specified conditions (especially temperature)
