German   English Comments
CAIRP   CAIRP 1-(5’-phosphoribosyl)-5-aminoimidazol-4-carboxylate
Carbolfuchsin   Carbolfuchsin Dye used in acid-fast staining
Carbolsäure   Carbolic acid Preferred name:  phenol
Carbonsäure   Carboxylic acid, -COOH Rarely if ever carbonic acid (carbon dioxide)
Casein   Casein
Chemischer Sauerstoffbedarf   Chemical oxygen demand, COD Amount of oxygen needed for complete oxidation of organic material in a wastewater to CO2
chemoautotroph adj Chemoautotrophic Able to grow on inorganic media
chemolithoautotroph   Chemolithoautotrophic Able to oxidize inorganic ions or compounds
Chemostat   Chemostat Microbial reactor (fermentor) for continuous culture, in which the flow rate (nutrient in, culture out) is adjusted to control the cell concentration.
Chemotaxis   Chemotaxis Movement of bacteria toward or away from certain chemicals in the medium
Chinasäure   Chinic acid; Quinic acid
chinesische Tusche   India ink Used for negative staining because it does not penetrate bacterial cells
Chinon   Quinone
Chloroplast   Chloroplast Organelle containing chlorophyll, which carries out photosynthesis in green algae and higher plants
Chlorosome   Chlorosome Organelle containing chlorophyll in green sulfur bacteria
Chorismasäure  (= Chorisminsäure)   Chorismic acid
Chromatographie   Chromatography
Clark Elektrode   Clark electrode Amperometric system for determining dissolved oxygen, with a platinum cathode and silver anode; a low DC voltage is applied, and the current is directly proportional to oxygen concentration (or oxygen partial pressure in air or other gas).
Clostridien pl Clostridia Strictly anaerobic spore-forming bacteria
CoA   CoA Coenzyme A
Coenzym   Coenzyme A small organic molecule required for full activity of an enzyme, such as NAD
Cofaktor   Cofactor Usually a coenzyme (or an activator, typically a metal ion)
Coliform   Coliform Organism similar to E. coli. Drinking water is often tested for coliforms, and a positive test is followed by the more specific (and difficult) test for E. coli or for ‘fecal coliforms’.
Conidien pl Conidia  (sing.: Conidium) Fungal spores
Coulter Counter   Coulter Counter An electronic system for counting small particles suspended in an electrolyte solution as they pass through a small orifice, utilizing the increased resistance of the orifice when a particle is present.
CSB (chemische Sauerstoffbedarf)   COD Chemical oxygen demand
Cyanobakterien   Cyanobacteria Blue-green bacteria. Some writers consider this group to include the blue-green algae (cyanophyta).
Cyanocobalamin   Cyanocobalamine Vitamin B12
Cyanophyten   Blue-green algae; cyanophyta
Cyst   Cyst A thick-walled spherical resistant form (apparently not all heat-resistant)
